• Copenhagen began planning at an ecological level in 1947 with the conception of the Finger Plan.

• Development was to be encouraged along transportation corridors, serving two purposes: to increase the efficiency of public transportation, and to create ecological corridors (between the “fingers”) connecting the city with the surrounding countryside.
• A densely populated city core forced the issue of pedestrian-friendly development.
• In 1962 Copenhagen laid the foundation of a city pedestrian center, which has maintained a steady rate of expansion since that time.
• Copenhagen now has an extensive system of pedestrian streets, creating a more people-friendly atmosphere for those living or working within the city center.
• 25,000 people use the walking streets in winter, 55,000 in the summer.
