A spike in housing prices in America clearly illustrated in this chart from Robert Shiller.  The sharp up rise in cost begins in 1997 and reaches a zenith in July of 2008.  And then the crash and prices fell off just as sharply as they had risen.  The projection is that they will return to their average from a decade ago.
