What Will Save the Suburbs?

When the writer says it is cheaper to abandon a big box and build a new big box, ask yourself, who is it cheaper for?  Definitely for the corporation who owns the big box.  But what about the municipality that hosted the old box?  The new municipality?  Does the corporation pay enough taxes to cover the money that the municipality chips in – utility grids, roads, upkeep – to build and maintain the box?  Who cleans up the old box – ie. does the corporation chip in?  Nope.  They’re good at externalizing costs.  What kinds of incentives are paid using public municipal funds to pay for the corporation to relocate?

Cheaper is an incredibly sweeping generalization.  I think this writer has a ton more homework to do before making these bright claims.
