Energy Consumption vs GDP

The US has the same GDP as Japan per capita and yet consumes twice as much energy.  Canada has the same GDP as the UK, Germany, France and yet consumes twice as much energy.  Saudi Arabia has the same GDP as Argentina and the world average, yet it consumes four times the energy.  Russia has the same GDP as China, yet it consumes three times the energy.  The US has seven times the per capita GDP as the world average, and consumes five times the energy.
