Here’s an interesting map of food manufacturers in New York city.  The dots show the companies and the tones show the density of activity.  The densest manufacturing activity is on the east river, perhaps a hold over from when materials were shipped up the river, and where the factories and warehouses were originally built.  Besides the river, most activity is clustered close to the biggest, densest markets – lower Manhattan, and western Brooklyn and Queens.

From the website:

More than half of the City’s food manufacturing establishments were in less than 20 percent of the City’s zip codes. Notable areas include Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Tribeca, Little Italy, and the Lower East Side in Manhattan; and Hunts Point in the Bronx. Check out more food manufacturing facts in our Economic Snapshot (PDF).
