a zone of heightened mutual vulnerability

An incredible definition of a park.  And I thought a park was swings, pooper scoopers, scraped knees and daisies!

Roberto Unger says a public park is a place where you can be vulnerable enough to meet two principal needs at the same time and in the same place:  the need for social life and connection; and the need to maintain autonomy and independence:

a zone of heightened mutual vulnerability, within which people gain a chance to resolve more fully the conflict between the enabling conditions of self assertion; between their need for attachment and for participation in group life and their fear of subjugation and depersonalization with which such engagement may threaten them.
