A bitter pill if you like to hate New York; and a truth that may go straight to the head if you live there.  Cities, not suburbs, are sustainable because density makes people and processes and material more efficient.  There is really nothing – not lightbulbs, nor extra layers of insulation, nor low e glass, nor hybrid vehicles – that can compete with the drastic reduction in energy and material consumption that results when people decide to build and live in cities.  It’s simple physics that’s been obscured for generations by the mavens of the garden suburb.
